Dear Neighbor,

On behalf of the United HOA, I would like to thank you for signing our petition against the Cerritos-ABCUSD housing development plan. Our joint effort has resulted in major changes in the original plan. The new plan is posted on the city website at http://www.ci.cerritos.ca.us/comnews/PressReleases/Proposed_Housing.html. Please visit it for details. Problems with the new plan include:

• It breaks the decades-long tradition of not allowing apartment buildings in Cerritos.
• It builds more than 150 housing units over what is required by the state with no credit to the city.
• Cerritos must generate over $3 million per year and hand it over to ABCUSD for the next 55 years.
• There is no guarantee the money generated by this project will benefit our students and schools.
• California Constitution Article 34 requires voter approval for public rental housing projects like this.

The city council is ignoring the call of 1355 residents to stop this project and put it to a vote by the people, and will instead vote to approve it on November 20, 2007. If this is acceptable to you, then please let us know so we will stop fighting it. Otherwise, here is what you can do to help change the city council’s mind:

• Call or email all five city council members immediately and tell them to stop what they are doing.
• Attend the city council meeting at 7 pm, November 20, 2007, and speak up if you can.

To help stop this project, we also must help elect ABC school board candidates who oppose it. They are Sally Havice, Paul Kahng, David Shaffer and Sophia Tse. Here is what you can do:

• Put up their campaign signs, donate money to their campaigns and/or help with their campaign chores.
• Help them get as many absentee ballot votes as possible between now and November 6.
• Vote for them and encourage your neighbors and friends to vote for them on November 6.

They need your generous help to win the election and become your voice on the school board, because their opponents want this project to go through and they get a lot of help in money and manpower from the union leadership.
